Some time ago, I was struggling to bond 2 adult rabbits. Domino has spent the first 2 years of her life in a rescue centre watching rabbits come and go either side of her. Every relationship has been through bars. I brought her home to Snowy and as long as there were bars between them, they had a lovely relationship. If I removed the bars, soft sweet Domino became 'ninja psycho bunny' much to Snowy’s complete bewilderment. As I pondered this situation, I realised that Domino was quite content to bask in love through her safety bars not trusting that Snowy was desperate to offer a deeper more fulfilling relationship with the freedom of a whole garden.
Domino is not so different from most of us. Over years we construct our cage and are quite happy to receive from God through the bars. Each cage is constructed of different material: our perception of God, our past experience of him, our belief structure of our own strengths, weaknesses, church—how, when and why it should be done, how we should behave and the list goes on. Have you ever wondered if God wants to have a deeper relationship with us than our cage allows? What is your cage? What will it take for you to step over that threshold and trust that God is there waiting to show you a whole new experience of Him? A relationship which will cause every previous experience to pale into insignificance. Lean into Him, come out of the cage and enjoy the roller coaster of life that He has planned for you. Whatever your stage in life, know that God has a new thing He wants to do with you, a new depth, a fresh beginning. Spend time in His presence and let Him show you the doorway out of your cage. I guarantee it is scary and you might make some mistakes but our loving Father God will catch you and then He will take you to beautiful places you would never see from where you are now.
Oh and if you happen to come across someone having a bit of a bunny meltdown, don’t hold it against them, they could just have ventured out of their cage. Give them a hug (if it’s safe) and send some prayers their way. Let them know that you have their back because we can all be that bunny sometimes.
Incidentally, Domino did eventually take a chance on Snowy and although it took a whole year, they are now enjoying a deeper, intimate relationship and they are much happier rabbits for it.
